Matt Ithurburn, PT, DPT, PhD, is a prominent clinical researcher in sports medicine and rehabilitation. He serves as the Director of Clinical Research at the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI) in Birmingham, Alabama, where he leads a multidisciplinary team focused on surgical outcomes, biomechanics, and injury prevention. Concurrently, he holds an Adjunct Professor role at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), mentoring PhD students and guest lecturing in the DPT program. At Samford University, he is the Interim Research Director for Project SAMson, a collaboration involving Samford Athletics, Andrews Sports Medicine, ASMI, and the Brock School of Business and College of Health Sciences.
His research specializes in improving rehabilitation and return-to-sport outcomes for lower extremity injuries, including ACL reconstruction, femoroacetabular impingement, and hip dysplasia.
