- Media and communications (focusing on T. W. Adorno and critical theory)
- Psychoanalysis applications in writing pedagogy
- Intergenerational relations and DJ/music cultures
- Generational musical identity among older populations
His work consistently bridges theoretical frameworks with practical educational and cultural applications.
Analysis of his 2002-2013 publications reveals three dominant trajectories: writing pedagogy innovation in higher education, critical analyses of media/culture through Adorno's lens, and intergenerational studies of music consumption. Key methodological approaches include dialogic analysis and psychotherapeutic frameworks applied to academic literacy.
Dr Connell supervises PhD students and collaborates with Charity Shop DJ Productions Ltd on intergenerational music projects. His professional identity as 'DJ Dr Matt' creates unique synergies between academic research and music culture practice, informing both his teaching and publications.
