Mats Wickström holds the academic rank of Docent (Associate Professor) at Åbo Akademi University's Faculty of Arts, Psychology and Theology, Department of Culture, History and Philosophy. His research focuses on minority nationalism, post-war social policy, and Finland-Swedish identity formation. He has led/co-investigated five major projects including the MOR project (2022-2026) examining minority welfare and reproduction, and the 'Etnonationalism i Finland' study (2022-).
Key research interests include Finland-Swedish antifascism, labor movement ideologies, and the intersection of class struggle and ethnic identity. His work spans 56 publications since 2010, with recent focus on post-war welfare systems, ethnonationalism, and transnational radical movements. He actively participates in academic networks through conferences and peer-review activities, including organizing the AA-SH research seminar (2021).
Notable projects include investigations into 1930-1950 Finnish ethnonationalism and the role of communist theory in shaping minority politics. His publications combine historical analysis with critical theory, addressing topics like mixed marriages among minorities and the cultural preservation strategies of Finland-Swedish communities.
