Mats Hyvönen is a Researcher and Program Coordinator at Uppsala University's Department of Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology. He holds a PhD in Media and Communication Studies from Mid Sweden University (2014), where his dissertation analyzed Swedish local newspapers' self-images from 1920-2010. As research coordinator for the Engaging Vulnerability program, he leads interdisciplinary initiatives and collaborates with institutions like Mid Sweden University.
His research explores: 1) Climate communication through aerial/satellite imagery, examining tensions between environmental awareness and perceptual distance; 2) Rural public spheres in globalized media landscapes; 3) Media history with focus on press evolution and institutional studies; 4) Vulnerability in art/media; and 5) Higher education policy critiques, particularly regarding 'world-class' university discourses.
Hyvönen's publications (2016-2023) show strong thematic coherence, with 60% focusing on media ethics/technology (drone journalism, digital disinformation), 30% on higher education policy (rankings, neoliberalism), and 10% on Scandinavian cultural studies. His work consistently employs critical theoretical frameworks across these domains.
He has secured significant grants including Swedish Research Council funding (2020) for 'True Crime on the Air' (radio documentary analysis) and Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation support for the 'Journalism from Above' international conference (2019). He co-leads projects with collaborators like Jonas Harvard (climate visuals) and Maria Karlsson (true crime studies).
