Mathijs Adriaan Janssen

Mathijs Adriaan Janssen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), Faculty of Science and Technology. His research focuses on the theoretical and computational modeling of electrolyte dynamics in porous electrodes, with applications in batteries, supercapacitors, and fuel cells.

His research interests lie at the intersection of electrochemistry, electrokinetics, and physical chemistry, with a strong emphasis on mathematical modeling and multiscale simulations. He employs continuum models, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and equivalent circuit models to understand complex interfacial phenomena in energy storage systems. His work is closely integrated with experimental collaborators, ensuring strong validation and applicability.

Janssen leads the PoreCharge project, funded by the Norwegian Research Council (FRIPRO) with 8 million NOK, which aims to develop advanced models for ion transport in porous electrodes. He also contributes to the EU Horizon Europe-funded BatCAT project, where his team performs continuum modeling of redox flow batteries. These grants reflect the significance and impact of his research in sustainable energy technologies.

He is actively involved in teaching, serving as course responsible for FYS236 Electrodynamics (2023–2025) and FYS253 Thermal Physics (2023–2024). He also contributes to FYS102 Termofysikk og elektromagnetisme and FYS102A Fysikk for bioteknologer in 2024. His teaching spans foundational and applied physics for both general and specialized (biotechnology) student cohorts.
