Mathieu Roy is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at McGill University. He leads the Roy Pain Lab, focusing on understanding how the brain encodes pain experiences through techniques like EEG, fMRI, and psychophysiological measurements. His research explores how expectations and emotions influence pain perception and its variability across individuals.
Research Interests include Behavioral Neuroscience, Cognition & Cognitive Neuroscience, and Clinical Psychology. He investigates neural mechanisms underlying pain modulation, particularly the interplay between cerebral and spinal systems, and the role of emotional states in pain processing.
Selected Publications highlight studies on aversive prediction errors in brain regions like the periaqueductal gray, ventromedial prefrontal-subcortical systems, and the impact of music on nociception. His work bridges clinical and basic neuroscience, addressing why pain persists without injury and how emotions shape pain perception.
Lab and Team: The Roy Pain Lab integrates multidisciplinary approaches to advance understanding of pain mechanisms and their clinical applications.
