Mathieu Chantal

Mathieu Chantal is a Full Professor of Medicine at the Catholic University of Leuven (KU Leuven), serving as Chair of Endocrinology at University Hospital Gasthuisberg Leuven since 2009. He holds leadership roles, including Program Director of Biomedical Sciences at KU Leuven and Honorary President of the Flemish Diabetes Association (VDV). His academic service includes editorial board memberships at Endocrinology and Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, as well as roles in global diabetes research initiatives.

Research interests focus on Type 1 diabetes mechanisms, islet transplantation, vitamin D’s immunoregulatory roles, and novel therapeutic strategies. His work bridges basic science and clinical application, emphasizing immune tolerance induction and β-cell protection.

• Awards: 2013 Inbev-Baillet-Latour Prize for Clinical Research, 2007 Mary Jane Kugel Award, and 2005 Novo Nordisk Diabetes Award.
• Leadership: Member of JDRF’s Medical Science Review Committee (Immunology), Research Foundation-Flanders (FWO), and European Medical Research Councils (EMRC).

Chantal’s research group explores vitamin D’s role in autoimmune modulation, anti-CD3 therapy, and translational approaches to diabetes prevention. He collaborates internationally on immunotherapeutic strategies and islet transplantation outcomes.
