Mathias Vuille is the Distinguished Professor in the Department of Atmospheric & Environmental Sciences at the University at Albany, SUNY. His research focuses on tropical climate variability, paleoclimatology, and glacier-climate interactions in the Andes and East Africa. He leads the Vuille Lab, which integrates observational data and climate models to study past, present, and future climate dynamics.
Education:
- 1991: MS in Atmospheric Science, University of Bern
- 1995: PhD in Atmospheric Science, University of Bern
- 1996-99: Postdoctoral Research Associate, University of Massachusetts
Research Interests: Investigates tropical glacier retreat impacts, isotopic proxy interpretations, and climate modeling to bridge paleoclimate and modern climate studies. Key regions include the tropical Andes and East African highlands.
Grants & Collaborations:
- NSF-funded projects on Andean glaciers and South American monsoon dynamics
- NOAA Climate Change Data & Detection grants
- Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI)
- World Bank collaborations on climate adaptation in the Andes
Key Contributions: Pioneered studies on elevation-dependent warming in the tropical Andes, CMIP6-based glacier projections, and paleoclimate reconstructions using speleothems and tree rings.
