Mathias Thura

Mathias Thura is a Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Strasbourg and a teacher-researcher at CUEJ (Centre universitaire d'enseignement du journalisme). He is a member of the SAGE laboratory (Sociétés, acteurs, gouvernement en Europe), affiliated with axis 4: State, work, market, government mechanisms. His research focuses on military sociology, work, professions, the body, and violence.

His research interests include:

• Sociology of Professions and Work: professional careers, socialization, ethnography of work, labor segmentation.
• Sociology of the Body: body techniques, embodiment, professional habitus.
• Sociology of Violence: administration of military force, training in lethal techniques.

His recent publications (2023–2014) span journals such as Sociologie du travail, Terrain, and Dynamiques internationales, as well as collective volumes. His work emphasizes ethnographic methods, researcher positioning, and the challenges of fieldwork in closed institutions like the military.

He is actively involved in academic service:

• Member of AFS RT1 (Knowledge, Work, Professions), contributing to doctoral events and research coordination.
• Member of the AEGES Board of Directors, participating in conferences and panel discussions.

He teaches sociology and research methods at the University of Strasbourg and Rennes 2, supervising dissertations and field training. He co-supervises two doctoral students working on military digitalization and defense education.
