Prof. Mathias Frisch is a Professor of Philosophy at Leibniz University Hannover and co-director of the DFG-funded Center SOCRATES. He previously held positions at the University of Maryland (2003-2016) and Northwestern University (1998-2003). His research focuses on philosophy of science, particularly the philosophy of physics and issues related to climate change. He co-edits the European Journal for Philosophy of Science.
Education: PhD from UC Berkeley (1998) with a dissertation on scientific explanation models. Key publications include Inconsistency, Asymmetry, and Non-Locality (2005) and Causal Reasoning in Physics (2014).
Research interests span causation in physics, climate ethics, and the role of models in scientific reasoning. His work addresses deep uncertainties in climate policy, ethical dimensions of scientific communication, and the social credibility of expert knowledge.
Professional roles include membership in the Faculty Council, Examination Board for Philosophy of Science, and leadership in university governance. His articles critically examine climate modeling practices, pandemic response ethics, and foundational issues in physics.
Labs/Teams: Co-leads the SOCRATES research initiative exploring expert knowledge trustworthiness. Engages in interdisciplinary collaborations bridging philosophy, climate science, and policy studies.
