Mathias Franc Kluge is a Professor of Medieval History at the University of Bremen since March 2024. He has held visiting positions at the University of Alberta (2017-2018), University of Victoria (2017), and Duisburg-Essen (2024-2025), while serving as a Lehrbeauftragter at Bayreuth (2020-2024). His academic work bridges economic history, digital humanities, and urban studies, with a focus on medieval financial systems, document culture, and city dynamics.
Research Interests span economic and social history, environmental history (notably medieval forests), cultural history of cities, and digital history. His projects integrate artificial intelligence with historical analysis, emphasizing archival practices and financial documentation. Key themes include debt networks, royal courts, and the materiality of medieval texts.

Academic Leadership includes editing the collaborative digital textbook Mittelalterliche Geschichte: Eine digitale Einführung (2020-2023), with over 7,000 monthly users, and co-authoring Handschriften des Mittelalters, a codicology reference now in its 3rd edition (2019). His upcoming Verschuldete Könige (2021) explores royal finance in the 15th century.
