Mathew Zefeldt is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. He is also the Director of Graduate Studies in Art. His work explores the intersection of traditional painting techniques and contemporary screen culture, examining how digital media and technology influence aesthetic principles and painterly practices.

Zefeldt’s research investigates the relationship between physical and virtual realities, focusing on themes such as repetition, simulation, and the ontology of images. He employs digital operations like copy, paste, and transformation in his painting process, creating immersive installations that question the boundaries between digital and physical spaces.
His exhibitions, such as Desktop (2016) and Customizable Realities (2019), have been showcased in galleries like The Hole (New York), Big Pictures LA, and Circuit 12 Contemporary. These works often involve grid-based repetitions of digital imagery, pixelation, and playful interactions between virtual and physical media.
