Matej Oresic is a Professor of Biochemistry (Metabolomics) at the University of Turku, Finland, and Professor of Medicine with specialization in Systems Medicine at Örebro University, Sweden. He leads research in metabolomics and systems medicine, focusing on environmental exposures and their impact on metabolic health. His work bridges biochemistry, computational biology, and clinical applications to understand disease mechanisms.
Dr. Oresic earned his PhD in Biophysics from Cornell University in 1999. His academic journey has established him as a leading figure in metabolomics research.
Professor Oresic's research focuses on exposomics and metabolomics applications in biomedical research. He investigates how environmental exposures (the exposome) interact with metabolic phenotypes to influence disease development and comorbidities. His work integrates systems biology approaches to understand complex disease mechanisms, particularly in metabolic disorders, immune-mediated conditions, and neurological diseases. The Oresic lab develops innovative computational methods for metabolomics data analysis, contributing significantly to the field's methodological advancement.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on environmental exposures, lipidomics, and their connections to human health. Key themes include PFAS and other environmental contaminants, gut microbiome interactions, metabolic diseases, and diagnostic biomarker discovery. His work spans from analytical method development to clinical applications, showing a comprehensive approach to systems medicine.
Professor Oresic has received notable recognition for his contributions to the field:
- Lifetime Honorary Fellow of the Metabolomics Society (2016)
Professor Oresic actively leads major research initiatives, currently coordinating the Horizon Europe project "Inflammation in human early life: targeting impacts on life-course health – INITIALISE" and co-coordinating "Investigation of endocrine-disrupting chemicals as contributors to progression of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease – EDC-MASLD." His laboratory has secured substantial funding for exposome and metabolomics research, supporting interdisciplinary collaborations across Europe.
The Oresic Lab is part of the Systems Medicine research group at Turku Bioscience Centre and collaborates closely with the Metabolomics Core facility. His team integrates computational approaches with experimental metabolomics to address complex biomedical questions, maintaining strong connections with clinical researchers to ensure translational impact of their findings.
