Massimo Lupascu is an Associate Professor in Geography at NUS, investigating climate and land-use impacts on carbon-rich ecosystems. His research examines carbon emissions from Arctic and tropical peatlands, with current fieldwork across Southeast Asia.
Holding a PhD in Physical Geography from the University of Bristol, Lupascu leads projects on peat decomposition processes, greenhouse gas fluxes, and sustainable land management. Research addresses carbon loss mechanisms in degraded peatlands and develops climate-smart agricultural practices.
As PI of the Integrated Tropical Peat Program at NUS Environmental Research Institute, he coordinates studies on peat conservation, restoration potential, and community-based management strategies across Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei.
