Massimo Filippini

Massimo Filippini is a Full Professor in Economics holding a joint professorship at ETH Zurich and the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) since October 1999. He is affiliated with the Faculty of Economics and the Institute of Economics (IdEP) at USI, and with the Department of Management, Technology, and Economics (D-MTEC) at ETH Zurich. He serves as Director of the Centre for Energy Policy and Economics (CEPE) and is a member of the Center for Economic Research (CER-ETH).

His educational background includes a doctorate in Economics from the University of Zurich, where he was later awarded the title of Titularprofessor in 2003. He has held visiting positions at MIT, Harvard University (both Kennedy School and Economics Department), University of York, and University of British Columbia.

Professor Filippini's research focuses on energy economics and policy, behavioral economics, applied econometrics, and public economics. Key areas include energy efficiency, energy demand modeling, regulation of energy markets, productivity analysis, and health economics, particularly in nursing homes and long-term care. His work emphasizes rigorous econometric methods to evaluate policy instruments.

The recent publications and seminar activities reflect a strong engagement in energy, environmental, and resource economics, with increasing attention to sustainable finance and behavioral insights in economic decision-making. The research output is interdisciplinary, policy-relevant, and internationally collaborative.

Massimo Filippini has advised numerous PhD and Master’s students and leads a research group that actively collaborates internationally. He coordinates the Empirical Methods in Energy Economics (EMEE) network and has served as President of the Swiss Association for Energy Economics (SAEE). His research is supported by various funded projects and institutional affiliations, including MIT’s Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research. He serves on several editorial boards and has published over 120 articles in top-tier journals.

He leads the Joint Chair of Energy and Public Economics at ETH and USI, which operates under CEPE and CER-ETH. The research group fosters international collaboration, hosts seminar series, and contributes to policy briefs and academic discourse in energy and public economics.
