Massimo Contrafatto

Dr. Massimo Contrafatto is a Reader in Accounting at the University of Sussex Business School, where he also convenes the PhD program in Accounting and Finance. Previously, he served as Associate Professor at the University of Bergamo (Italy) and held visiting roles at the University of Glasgow, University of Dundee, and currently remains an Honorary Senior Fellow at the latter. He holds a PhD in Business Administration from the University of Milan-Bicocca, with specialization in Accounting for Sustainability, complemented by postdoctoral research at the University of St Andrews and collaborative work with the Centre for Social and Environmental Accounting Research (CSEAR).

Dr. Contrafatto’s research focuses on accounting for sustainability, accountability mechanisms, institutional theory, and organizational change. His work employs qualitative methodologies across multinational corporations, social enterprises, and cooperatives. He has published widely in journals like Accounting, Organization and Society and serves on editorial boards for Accounting, Auditing and Accountability Journal and Social and Environmental Accountability Journal.

His professional roles include Director of CSEAR Italy and membership in the Executive Council of CSEAR. He has earned certifications including Italy’s National Academic Qualification for Full Professorship (2018) and a Post Graduate Qualification in Higher Education (2006). His language proficiency spans Italian (native), English (fluent), and Spanish (conversational).
