Massimiliano Guasoni is a Principal Research Fellow at the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC), University of Southampton. He leads the Multimode Photonics Group and holds an Associate Professor equivalence status. His research program focuses on nonlinear dynamics in multimode waveguides with applications in optical amplification and integrated photonics. Guasoni actively supervises PhD students and contributes to advanced photonics education.
His primary research interests include:
- Nonlinear optics in complex waveguide systems
- Fiber optical amplifiers and oscillators for high-power applications
- Integrated photonic circuits for signal processing
- Multimode light shaping from fibers to nanodevices
- All-optical reconfigurable photonics systems
Guasoni's publication record demonstrates consistent advancement in multimode photonics, with recent work spanning sub-nanosecond optical switching, on-chip multimode integration, and novel amplifier designs. His projects bridge fundamental nonlinear dynamics with practical device development for telecommunications and sensing applications.
Major scientific recognition includes:
- ERC Starting Grant (2018) for project MODES
- Marie Curie Individual Fellowship (2016)
Guasoni co-designed and teaches the MSc module 'Signal Processing and Machine Learning in Photonics' (OPTO 6017). He currently supervises PhD students Pooja Uday Naik and Di Yu within the ORC. His research is supported by significant grants including an EPSRC project on 'Self-organized light in multicore optical fibers' as Principal Investigator since 2020. The Multimode Photonics Group maintains strong industry and academic collaborations focused on next-generation optical technologies.
