Massimiliano Andretta is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Pisa, affiliated with the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences. He teaches Comparative Politics, Political Communication, Political Participation, Social Movements, and International Relations. His research focuses on democracy, deliberation, and public policies, with a strong emphasis on social movements, transnational activism, and the dynamics of political mobilization. He has contributed to international projects such as the European Social Forums and has authored works on global justice movements, transnational protest networks, and democratic practices.
Key research themes include the role of emotions in activism, resistance to right-wing populism, and the intersection of digital platforms with labor movements. His work explores how social movements adapt to crises (e.g., the pandemic) and how cultural elements like music intersect with populist discourse. He has published extensively in journals such as European Foreign Affairs Review and co-authored monographs on globalization from below and transnational protest networks.
His recent studies analyze climate activism (e.g., Fridays for Future), the impact of social media on political engagement, and solidarity movements in times of emergency. Andretta’s research bridges theoretical contributions with empirical case studies, offering insights into both localized and global political dynamics.
