Massensen Cherbi

Massensen Cherbi is a researcher currently affiliated with the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) at the GIGA Institute for Middle East Studies since September 2024. Their work spans constitutional law, political accountability, and regional studies focused on Algeria and the Maghreb.

• Current Research: Nonconstitutionalist constitutions & authoritarianism, democratization, civil-military relations in constitutional law, human rights, rule of law, state religion, secularism & status of women, cultural pluralism

Academic Affiliations: Fellow at the Merian Center for Advanced Studies in the Maghreb (MECAM) (2023–2026), University of Tunis. Former temporary teaching/research roles at Université Le Havre Normandie, Sciences Po Grenoble/Toulouse, and multiple universities in Paris.

Publications: Recent work on Ferhat Abbas's draft of Algeria's 1963 Constitution, exploring its implications for understanding early post-independence political dissent and democratic ideals in a Muslim-majority context.
