Masashi Sugiyama

Masashi Sugiyama serves as Director of the RIKEN Center for Advanced Intelligence Project and Professor in the Department of Complexity Science and Engineering at the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, The University of Tokyo, with additional affiliated professorships in the Department of Computer Science (Graduate School of Information Science and Technology) and Department of Information Science (Faculty of Science).

He earned his Bachelor of Engineering (1997), Master of Engineering (1999), and Doctor of Engineering (2001) in Computer Science from Tokyo Institute of Technology, where he subsequently served as Assistant Professor (2001) and Associate Professor (2003) before joining the University of Tokyo in 2014.

His research pioneers statistical machine learning frameworks for non-stationary environments, density ratio estimation, and weakly supervised learning, with applications spanning data mining, signal/image processing, and robot control. This work bridges theoretical foundations with practical implementations in AI systems.

The RIKEN Center for Advanced Intelligence Project under his leadership integrates cross-disciplinary teams advancing core AI technologies and their societal implementation across scientific, industrial, and governmental domains.
