Professor Masaru 'Macha' Suzuki is a faculty member in the Department of Art at Loyola Marymount University's College of Communication and Fine Arts, where he has taught since 2017. He specializes in three-dimensional design, environmental art, and socially conscious art education. His teaching philosophy emphasizes empowering students to create art that addresses social and environmental issues while fostering personal growth through creativity.
Education:
- B.A. in Studio Art from Azusa Pacific University
- M.F.A. in Sculpture from Claremont Graduate University
Research interests include the transformative potential of 3D art, the use of recycled materials, and the intersection of art with social justice. Suzuki’s work often explores themes of failure and growth, reflected in his autobiographical sculptures exhibited internationally, including at Laguna Art Museum and Vincent Price Art Museum. He recently exhibited a solo show in Tokyo.
Teaching and Innovation: Suzuki leads courses like '3-D Design' and 'Make Something! An Introduction to 3D Art,' which emphasize hands-on experimentation with non-traditional materials. He leverages LMU's makerspace studio, design labs, and ceramics/painting studios to engage students in creating portfolio-ready works. His summer program for high schoolers focuses on functional art and sculptural design.
Labs/Teams: Integrates LMU’s makerspace and innovation labs into curriculum, fostering collaborative and interdisciplinary art practices.
