Masami Fujiwara is an Associate Professor in the Department of Ecology and Conservation Biology at Texas A&M University’s College of Agriculture & Life Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in Biological Oceanography from MIT/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (2002) and has been a faculty member since 2009. His research integrates ecological theory, machine learning, mathematical modeling, and empirical data to understand population dynamics and inform conservation strategies.
Dr. Fujiwara’s expertise spans population ecology, coastal marine systems, and fisheries management. He has secured over $2 million in external funding from NSF and NOAA, and serves on PLoS One’s editorial board. His work focuses on climate impacts, species distribution shifts, and anthropogenic effects on aquatic ecosystems, with notable contributions to dam impacts on migratory fish and pesticide effects on shrimp populations.
- Education:
- B.S. Biological Sciences, University of Alaska Fairbanks
- M.S. Marine Biology, University of Alaska Fairbanks
- Ph.D. Biological Oceanography, MIT/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
- Awards: Over $2M in NSF/NOAA grants
- Teaching: Leads graduate/undergraduate courses in population ecology and curriculum development
He has authored 56 peer-reviewed papers in top journals like Nature, Science, and Ecology Letters, emphasizing predictive modeling for natural populations and ecological resilience. His research bridges theoretical frameworks with applied conservation challenges, addressing topics like oil spill recovery, artificial reef ecology, and climate-driven biodiversity shifts.
