Dr. Masafumi Monden is a Lecturer in Japanese Studies at the University of Sydney's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, specializing in modern Japanese cultural history, fashion, gender studies, and popular culture. His research examines material cultures as embodiments of social and historical expressions, with particular focus on fashion aesthetics, constructions of girlhood (shōjo), and boyhood masculinity.
Monden's publications explore Japanese reinterpretations of European clothing traditions, the cultural significance of ballet in manga, and subversive representations of gender in fashion and media. His book Japanese Fashion Cultures: Gender and Dress in Contemporary Japan analyzes how clothing expresses complex gender relations. Current projects include studies of male modeling history and Australia-Japan cultural connections.
Monden serves on editorial boards for International Journal of Fashion Studies and Textile: Cloth and Culture. He regularly contributes to public discourse through media engagements with BBC, CNN, and academic lectures internationally. His teaching covers Japanese language, literature, media, and Asian popular culture, connecting historical context with contemporary cultural expressions.
