Masaaki Higashijima is an Associate Professor of Comparative Politics at the Institute of Social Science, University of Tokyo. Currently on sabbatical, he is affiliated with the Ellison Center for Russian, East European, and Central Asian Studies within the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington. His prior academic positions include roles at Tohoku University, Waseda University, European University Institute, American University of Central Asia, and the University of Michigan.
- Education: Ph.D. in Political Science, Michigan State University
His research spans comparative political economy, autocratic governance, regime transitions, political institutions, and Central Asian studies. His scholarly output has appeared in top-tier journals such as British Journal of Political Science, Comparative Political Studies, and World Development. His book The Dictator’s Dilemma at the Ballot Box (University of Michigan Press) explores electoral manipulation and political order in autocracies.
Key awards include the IDE-JETRO Award for Studies of Developing Countries and an Honorable Mention for the Ed A Hewett Book Prize from ASEEES. His research has been funded by prestigious organizations including the US National Science Foundation, World Bank, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Fulbright Commission, and Suntory Foundation.
