Dr. Mary Tumelty is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Law at University College Cork (UCC), specializing in Medical Law, Patient Safety, and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). She holds a PhD in Law from the University of Limerick (2018) and an LL.B (2014). Her research focuses on legal responses to medical errors, including civil, criminal, and regulatory frameworks, with an emphasis on empirical approaches to health law. She has been a member of Ireland’s Health and Social Care Professionals Council (2019–2023) and the Health Research Consent Declaration Committee (since 2021).
Key research grants include leadership in projects addressing healthcare workforce crises (Royal Irish Academy), clinical negligence mediation (Royal Irish Academy), and public health ethics (ESRC). She has published extensively on medical negligence litigation, vaccination policies, and legal frameworks for open disclosure of patient safety incidents. Her work bridges law and healthcare practice, advocating for systemic improvements in patient safety and clinician well-being.
Teaching interests include experiential learning in ADR, supported by National Forum grants. She organizes international conferences on dispute resolution and serves as a peer reviewer for journals such as Medical Law International and Journal of Patient Safety. Her professional memberships include the Irish Association of Law Teachers and the Society of Legal Scholars.
