Mary Stoddard is Professor in Princeton University's Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Her research explores animal coloration, avian vision, and evolutionary processes using multidisciplinary approaches combining computer science, optics, physiology, and genomics.
Fieldwork is conducted at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (Colorado) and Mountain Lake Biological Station (Virginia). Research investigates visual communication, color perception in hummingbirds, pattern recognition in eggshells, and the biomechanics of structural coloration.
Develops open-source optical tools and software for quantifying animal coloration. Leads the Princeton Better for Birds Project to reduce bird-window collisions through community engagement and architectural solutions.
