Mary Rose

Mary Rose is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Texas at Austin and serves as the Director of the Human Dimensions of Organizations Program. She is also an Affiliated Scholar at the American Bar Foundation and an Academic Fellow with the National Civil Justice Institute.

Education:

• B.A. in Psychology, Stanford University
• Ph.D. in Social Psychology, Duke University

Research Interests: Professor Rose's research focuses on lay participation in the legal system and perceptions of justice. Her work covers:

• Effects of jury selection practices on representativeness
• Citizens' views of justice systems
• Jury trial innovations and civil damage awards
• Public perception of court practices
• Decision-making in deliberating juries (Pima County study)

Publications: Her recent work (2015-2025) examines jury systems through interdisciplinary lenses of sociology, law, and psychology. Key themes include jury representation disparities, decision-making in capital cases, measurement of jury diversity, legal psychology, and the constitutional role of juries. Her studies frequently address systemic challenges in judicial processes.
