Mary Mitchell is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Social and Political Science. Her work focuses on child welfare, social work practices, and systemic reforms in child protection. She has led numerous projects evaluating the implementation of the Barnahus model in Scotland and explored innovative approaches to family conferencing in adult social care and mental health.
Her research emphasizes self-care among social workers and the participatory rights of children in decision-making processes. Mitchell has received the 2018 Scottish Graduate School of Social Sciences Impact and Knowledge Exchange Award for her contributions to policy-relevant research. She actively engages in public lectures, workshops, and parliamentary events to bridge academic research with practical applications.
Mitchell’s projects include evaluations of Bairns Hoose initiatives across Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, and Edinburgh, aiming to transform child protection systems. She collaborates closely with local councils and academic partners to advance evidence-based policies and practices.
