Mary McAleer Balkun is a Professor of English and Founding Director of the Center for Faculty Development at Seton Hall University. She holds a Ph.D. and specializes in Early American Literature, Material Culture, and Gender Theory. Her work bridges traditional literary studies with Digital Humanities, focusing on transformative educational technologies and curricular innovation.
Her research includes studies on the American grotesque, early American identity, and women’s narratives in colonial contexts. She co-edited Women of the Early Americas and the Formation of Empire (2016) and authored The American Counterfeit (2006). Current projects involve the Wiley Companion to American Poetry and a Routledge volume on Global Digital Humanities.
Balkun chairs multiple university committees, including the Instructional Technology Committee and the Digital Humanities Committee. She actively promotes faculty development and interdisciplinary collaboration through initiatives like the '4 Towns/1 Book' project on The 1619 Project.
Her teaching spans graduate and undergraduate courses such as Early American Literature, American Gothic Literature, and Introduction to Digital Humanities. She has received grants for digital humanities projects and is involved in national conferences on AI in education and Women’s Narratives.
