Dr. Mary Mazzilli is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Literature, Film and Theatre Studies (LiFTS) at the University of Essex since 2016. Prior to this, she held academic positions at Goldsmiths' Theatre and Performance Department (2015-2016), Nanyang Technological University (2012-2014), and Soas University of London where she earned her PhD. She combines academic rigor with practice-as-research, serving as Creative Director of Lumenis Theatre Company and maintaining active roles in institutional leadership as Co-director of the Centre for Theatre Research and Director of Impact at Essex.

Research Interests include:
- Transnational Chinese and East-Asian Theatre
- Postdramatic and Postmodern Performance
- Migration narratives in UK
- Intercultural dramaturgy
- Shakespeare and Tang Xianzu comparative studies
- Gender and Women's writing
Recent publications and grants (2017-2025) focus on migration, transnationalism, and ethics in performance. She supervises doctoral candidates in theatre practice, drama, and literature.
