Mary Lee Ryan is a Professor of the Practice of Entertainment Law and Director of the Entertainment Law Program at Chapman University's Fowler School of Law. With over 25 years of experience in the domestic and international entertainment industries, her expertise spans entertainment law, music industry law, copyright, and intellectual property.
Education:
- Bryn Mawr College (Bachelor of Science)
- New York University (Juris Doctor)
Research Focus: Her work centers on entertainment law frameworks, media contracts, and intellectual property negotiations within creative industries. At Chapman, she teaches Intellectual Property, Entertainment Law, and directs the Entertainment Law Clinic.
Professional Recognition:
- Awarded the Walter Derenberg Fellowship in Copyright Law during law school
Experience: Prior to Chapman, she held senior roles at Manatt, Phelps & Phillips; Columbia/TriStar Pictures; and Rondor Music International, Inc. (where she negotiated Universal Music Group's $400-500M acquisition of Rondor Music in 1989). She transitioned to private practice in 2002 before joining Chapman in 2010.
