Mary Kate McGowan is the Virginia Onderdonk '29 Professor of Philosophy at Wellesley College's Department of Philosophy. She specializes in metaphysics, philosophy of language, and philosophy of law, with a focus on intersections between speech and normative facts. Her work explores how speech perpetuates social hierarchies, particularly through pornography and hate speech, and she actively collaborates with students on research projects.

Her research spans metaphysical realism, logical reasoning, and legal linguistics. Recent projects examine speech performativity in criminal justice contexts, including perjury, consent, and threats.
