Mary K. Carroll is the Dwane W. Crichton Professor of Chemistry at Union College. She leads the Aerogel Lab, a cross-disciplinary research group co-directed with Ann M. Anderson, focusing on aerogel fabrication, characterization, and applications in sustainable materials and catalytic systems. Her work includes developing aerogel-based windows for energy efficiency and catalytic aerogels for automotive pollution reduction. She teaches courses in general and analytical chemistry, emphasizing laboratory-based inquiry.
Carroll holds a B.S. from Union College and a Ph.D. from Indiana University, followed by postdoctoral research at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Her research has been supported by NSF grants, including funding for thermal analysis instrumentation and catalytic material testing. She has received numerous awards, including the American Chemical Society presidency (2024) and the Stillman Prize for Excellence in Research (2021).
Her publications span aerogel applications in catalysis, insulation, and sustainability, often involving undergraduate researchers. Key collaborations include work with international teams on aerogel durability and optical properties. Carroll is also engaged in advancing chemistry education and promoting undergraduate research in technology entrepreneurship through grants like the SUITED initiative.
