Mary Jane Dempsey serves as a Lecturer in Italian Studies at Stony Brook University, teaching language, literature, and culture courses with research spanning migration histories, Italian cinema, critical race theory, and feminist memory studies.

Her research examines gendered memory constructions in 20th-21st century Italian migration through critical race and feminist lenses, analyzing how belonging is shaped in literary and cinematic narratives. Current work focuses on a monograph tracing migration histories to unpack intersections of gender, memory, and national identity.
Scientific Awards:
- Rome Prize Fellowship in Modern Italian Studies (2021-2022) from the American Academy in Rome
Research funding includes grants from Cornell’s Institute for European Studies, Society for the Humanities, Institute for Comparative Modernities, Brettschneider Exchange at Oxford University, and Trinity College’s Research Grant in Modern Italian History. Prior to Stony Brook, she was a Visiting Research Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Cultural Memory, University of London.
