Mary Ellen Scullen serves as the Director of the School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (SLLC) and is an Associate Professor of French at the University of Maryland. She holds a Ph.D. in French and Theoretical Linguistics from Indiana University and a Maîtrise de français langue étrangère from l'Université François Rabelais in Tours, France. Her research focuses on French linguistics, second language acquisition, pedagogy, and technology-enhanced language learning, particularly in online and blended learning environments.
She has authored influential textbooks such as Chez Nous: Branché sur le monde francophone and founded the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning (CITL) within SLLC. Previously, she taught at the University of Louisville and Chancellor College, University of Malawi in Southern Africa. Her work emphasizes integrating innovative technologies and cultural diversity into language education.
Her research and publications explore phonology, morphological processes, and pedagogical methodologies, reflecting her dual expertise in theoretical linguistics and applied language education. She actively contributes to initiatives like the Language Partner Program, fostering cross-cultural connections between international and domestic students.
