Mary E Witlacil

Dr. Mary E Witlacil is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, affiliated with the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences school. She holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Politics and Policy from Colorado State University, an MA in Politics and International Affairs from Northern Arizona University, and a BA in Political Science and French from the University of Colorado Denver.

Her research focuses on climate change, environmental injustice, and Indigenous politics through a Critical Theory lens. She explores coping mechanisms for the climate crisis through lenses of progress, pessimism, and consolation. As a research affiliate with the Center for Sustainable Solutions, she emphasizes collaboration on climate and environmental policy.

Her recent publications span political theory, environmental ethics, and pedagogical innovation. She teaches courses on political ideologies, environmental law, and the politics of nature/technology. Her teaching philosophy centers inclusive debate to foster democratic engagement among engineering and public service students.
