Mary Costello is an Associate Lecturer (part-time) in the Department of Art History at the University of Plymouth and the Exhibitions Programme Curator at The Arts Institute. She holds a BA (First Class Hons) in Art History with Gallery and Museum Studies and an MRes in Art History (Distinction), both from the University of Plymouth. Her dual role combines academic teaching with curatorial work, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to foster personal, social, economic, and environmental development.
Teaching focuses on modules such as Art After 1950, Decolonizing Modernism, and Art and Gender. Research interests include contemporary art curation, Viennese Modernism, and the decolonization of curricula. She has curated high-profile exhibitions like British Art Show 9 and Otherworlds: Marianne Walker and Sang-Mi Rha, and has contributed to academic publications on Viennese cultural history.
She has delivered invited lectures on topics such as The Arts Institute’s cultural role (2024) and Re-imagining the American Bar (2011). Her professional affiliations include roles with the Arts Council Ireland and ROSC exhibitions, and she actively supports student internships in Fine Art and Art History.
