Mary Christensen is an Associate Professor with tenure and the Director of the MSW Program at West Virginia University's School of Social Work. She was appointed as a tenure-track faculty member in 2015, promoted to Associate Professor in 2021, and became Director of the School of Social Work in 2025.

Dr. Christensen specializes in suicide prevention, focusing on implementation and evaluation of evidence-based suicide risk screening in real-world settings. Her work spans community mental health agencies, primary care, and school-based health centers, with expertise in behavioral health interventions, substance use treatment, and pedagogical training initiatives.
Her research is funded by the National Institutes of Mental Health, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and internal West Virginia University grants. She has served as a Scientific Advisor for AFSP and contributed to journals like Archives of Suicide Research through peer review.
