Associate Professor Mary Chapman is a scholar of American literature and cultural history at the University of British Columbia's Faculty of Arts, Department of English Language and Literatures. Her research focuses on suffrage literature, race, and transnational cultural dynamics. She has won the 2006 Yasuo Sakakibara Prize for her work on writer Sui Sin Far (Edith Maude Eaton), exploring intersections between Progressive Era reforms and exclusionary policies toward Chinese immigrants. Her projects highlight Sui Sin Far's contributions to Asian American literary voices and her critique of racialized exclusion within social justice movements. Current work includes analyzing Sui Sin Far's journalism and recovering understudied aspects of her career.
Her research interests include mixed-race identity, hybrid cultures, and gendered activism in literature. Chapman's projects bridge American literary studies with transnational perspectives, emphasizing marginalized voices in historical contexts. She has contributed to understanding how women navigated restricted communicative spaces through writing, particularly focusing on underrepresented figures like Sui Sin Far.
