Mary Campbell is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art History at the University of Tennessee. Her research focuses on race, sexuality, gender, and law within U.S. art, with notable works including Charles Ellis Johnson and the Erotic Mormon Image (2016) and an upcoming monograph on Beauford Delaney. She holds a PhD from Stanford University and a JD from Yale Law School, integrating legal perspectives into her scholarship and teaching.
Her grants include support from the NEH, ACLS, and the Stanford Humanities Center. She teaches art law and leads annual study abroad programs in Paris, where students explore Western art history and cultural practices. Campbell’s interdisciplinary work bridges art history, legal studies, and social justice, emphasizing how art reflects societal values and identities.
Professional affiliations include the Ewing Gallery and Downtown Gallery at UT, alongside involvement in the smART Lab and other institutional resources. Her current research on Beauford Delaney highlights African American artistic contributions and diasporic narratives.
