Associate Professor Mary Byrne is affiliated with the University of Sydney's School of Life and Environmental Sciences. Her research focuses on plant development, particularly leaf shape regulation and genetic influences on plant morphology. She is a member of the Sydney Institute of Agriculture and has secured grants including 'Protecting cereal grain development at high temperatures' (2023) and 'Genetic regulation of leaf shape and impacts on photosynthesis' (2022). Her work integrates molecular genetics, developmental biology, and environmental science.
Research interests include auxin signaling, leaf margin patterning, and the application of genetic insights to agricultural resilience. Byrne has published on topics ranging from SAW transcription factors to cereal grain thermotolerance.
Advising and grants highlight her leadership in interdisciplinary plant science. She holds a position within the Faculty of Science and collaborates widely in agricultural research.
