Mary Bitta, PhD, is a Research Fellow in Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. She holds appointments at the Aga Khan University Brain Maternal and Child Health Institute (AKU-BMI) and serves as a visiting scientist at the University of Oxford's Department of Psychiatry and the KEMRI Wellcome Trust Research Programme in Kilifi, Kenya. Her work focuses on developing contextually relevant interventions to address treatment gaps for mental, neurological, and substance use disorders in low-resource settings.
Dr. Bitta earned her PhD in Psychiatry from the University of Oxford (2023) and a Master's in Global Mental Health from King's College London (2017). She founded Difu Simo, a Kenyan non-profit organization addressing mental health stigma through participatory approaches. Her research emphasizes implementation science and community-centered strategies to improve mental health education, research, and care access.
Her affiliations include collaborations with institutions in sub-Saharan Africa, and she actively contributes to global primary care initiatives through the Program in Global Primary Care and Social Change at Harvard Medical School.
