Mary Beth Browning Monroe is an Assistant Professor in the Biology Department at Syracuse University's College of Arts and Sciences, with cross-appointment in Biomedical Engineering. She directs the Monroe Biomaterials Lab within the BioInspired Institute.
Education includes doctoral training in biomaterials and tissue engineering. Research develops stimulus-responsive polymers for medical applications including hemorrhage control, infection prevention, and Crohn's fistula treatment.
Innovations include protease-responsive wound dressings, shape-memory polymer foams for dual drug delivery, and 3D scaffolds for tissue regeneration. Work bridges polymer chemistry, microbiology, and clinical translation.
Honors include the Society for Biomaterials Young Investigator Award and Rosalind Franklin Society Special Award. Research has been recognized by the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation through the Litwin IBD Pioneers Award.
The lab employs advanced fabrication techniques including 3D printing and gas-blown hydrogel synthesis to create scaffolds with tailored mechanical and biological properties.
