Marveta M. Ryan-Sams

Marveta M. Ryan-Sams serves as Associate Professor of Spanish and Department Assistant Chairperson within the Language, Literature, and Writing Department at Indiana University of Pennsylvania's College of Arts, Humanities, Media, and Public Affairs. Her academic home is situated in Leonard Hall's Foreign Languages section on the fourth and fifth floors.

Dr. Ryan-Sams earned her doctorate in Hispanic Literatures from Harvard University in 1999. Her dissertation, Race, Culture, and Nation in Late Nineteenth-Century Poetry from the Dominican Republic, established her scholarly foundation in Caribbean literary traditions and cultural identity formation.

Her research program centers on Hispanic American and Caribbean literary production with specialized expertise in Dominican, Cuban, and Puerto Rican texts examining African and Native American cultural legacies. Through her publications and conference presentations, she investigates how literature reflects and shapes national narratives, racial dynamics, and cultural hybridity in the Hispanic Caribbean context. Her scholarly work demonstrates particular attention to postcolonial perspectives and identity construction in 19th and 20th century literature.

As Department Assistant Chairperson, Dr. Ryan-Sams provides significant administrative leadership while maintaining her teaching responsibilities in Spanish language, composition, and literature courses. Her classroom instruction spans foundational language skills to advanced cultural studies of Hispanic American and Caribbean literary traditions.
