Marty Kolls serves as a Lecturer in the Department of Music Education at Western University's Don Wright Faculty of Music, where she teaches music and conducts choir with an emphasis on practical, experiential learning. Her office is located in TC232, and she can be contacted at mkolls2@uwo.ca.
Kolls earned her music degree from the University of Western Ontario and pursued classical voice studies in Spoleto, Italy. Her international career spans performance work in Asian hotels, teaching at international schools across Asia and the Middle East, and conducting choirs at London's Montessori Academy.
Her creative and pedagogical focus centers on popular music genres including jazz, folk, and pop, with songwriting as a core methodology. Drawing from her background as a touring teenage performer and professional songwriter, she implements hands-on student engagement where learners consistently produce original lyrics and compositions. Kolls leverages her experience securing FACTOR music funding and London Arts Council grants to provide practical industry insights in her teaching.
Her instructional philosophy integrates experiential learning with real-world music creation, emphasizing consistent high-level output from students through direct application of songwriting techniques and industry-standard practices developed during her international performance career.
