Prof. Dr. Martin van der Laan is a Professor of Medical Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at Saarland University, where he leads a research group within the Center for Molecular Signaling (PZMS) at the University Medical Center in Homburg. His work focuses on mitochondrial biology, particularly the biogenesis, ultrastructure, and functional dynamics of these essential cellular organelles.
Dr. van der Laan's research interests span several interconnected areas of mitochondrial biology:
- The nano-architecture and spatio-temporal regulation of the mitochondrial inner membrane
- The structure, function, and regulation of membrane contact sites
- Mitochondrial protein import and sorting mechanisms
- The role of mitochondria in cellular metabolism and stress responses
- Mitochondrial dynamics and their implications for human health and disease
Analysis of Dr. van der Laan's recent publications (2018-2023) reveals a consistent focus on mitochondrial structure and function, with particular emphasis on the MICOS complex (Mitochondrial Contact Site and Cristae Organizing System), protein import machinery (particularly the TIM23 complex), and the relationship between mitochondrial architecture and cellular metabolism. His work combines structural, biochemical, and cell biological approaches to understand fundamental mechanisms of mitochondrial biology, with implications for understanding metabolic disorders and diseases.
Dr. van der Laan's research is supported by multiple funding sources, including the IRTG 1830, Barth Syndrome Foundation, BIF, and COMM. His laboratory employs a range of biochemical, genetic, and cell biological methods and maintains numerous local, national, and international collaborations.
The research group led by Dr. van der Laan is part of the Center for Molecular Signaling and focuses on understanding the fundamental molecular mechanisms of mitochondrial biology in the context of metabolic adaptation, cellular stress responses, and cell differentiation.
