Prof. Martin de Borst is a Consultant Nephrologist and Professor at the University of Groningen’s Faculty of Medical Sciences, affiliated with the Nutrition Research in Medicine (NiM), Groningen Institute for Organ Transplantation (GIOT), and Groningen Kidney Center (GKC). His research focuses on kidney transplantation outcomes, chronic kidney disease, and fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) biology. He leads editorial roles at Nephrology Dialysis and Transplantation and chairs the Scientific Council for Internal Medicine at UMCG.
Research interests include GFR estimation discrepancies, genetic factors in kidney transplantation, and post-transplant metabolic complications. He has been awarded the 2020 ERA-EDTA Young Investigator Award and multiple grants. His work addresses clinical nephrology challenges, leveraging biomarkers and molecular signatures to improve transplant outcomes.
Prof. de Borst collaborates internationally and leads studies on dietary potassium’s role in cardiorenal health, AI optimization for kidney allocation, and micronutrient deficiencies in transplant recipients. His labs and teams (e.g., TransplantLines) focus on biobanking and cohort studies to advance personalized kidney care.
