معرفی
Associate Professor Martin Weltman is a prominent hepatologist and gastroenterologist at the University of Sydney's Nepean Clinical School. He serves as Head of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Nepean Hospital, where he leads clinical services and research initiatives focused on liver diseases and gastrointestinal disorders. His academic credentials include MBBCh, PhD, FRACP, and FAChAM, reflecting his extensive expertise in clinical medicine and research.
Weltman's research spans multiple critical areas in hepatology and gastroenterology, with particular emphasis on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cholangitis, viral hepatitis (B and C), inflammatory bowel disease, and functional gastrointestinal disorders. His work integrates clinical trials, genomic studies, and epidemiological research to advance understanding and treatment of complex liver conditions. He has made significant contributions to understanding disease pathogenesis, prognostic indicators, and novel therapeutic approaches.
His publication record shows a consistent focus on translational research with strong emphasis on clinical applications. Recent work demonstrates growing interest in the intersection of metabolic disorders and liver disease, particularly regarding NAFLD and metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) in the context of viral hepatitis. His research frequently addresses challenging patient populations including those with autoimmune conditions, pregnant women with liver disease, and patients with comorbid substance use disorders.
Weltman maintains active professional affiliations with major organizations including the European Association for the Study of the Liver, Gastroenterological Society of Australia, Inflammatory Bowel Disease Australia, Australian Liver Association, and Royal Australasian College of Physicians. These memberships reflect his standing in both national and international hepatology communities.
His current research portfolio includes funded projects on autoimmune hepatitis pathogenesis and genomics (supported by the Hill Foundation), optimal use of purine analogues in autoimmune hepatitis, and outcomes of chronic liver disease patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. He participates in numerous clinical trials across multiple liver conditions including PBC, HCV, HBV, NASH, and inflammatory bowel diseases, demonstrating his commitment to advancing therapeutic options for patients.
