He is Chair of the Surrey Space Centre and holds a dual role at Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL). His work pioneered microsatellite technology, including the UoSAT-1 mission, and focuses on cost-effective spacecraft engineering for applications in satellite communications and Earth observation.
Education:
- PhD in HF (shortwave) antennas from the University of Surrey (1970s).
Research Interests: Revolutionizing space technology through microelectronics, developing low-cost satellites, and advancing Earth observation and telecommunications via microsatellites. His work emphasizes practical applications and global collaboration, with systems monitored by schools and radio amateurs worldwide.
Awards:
- Knighthood (2002) for services to space engineering
- OBE (1996) for research contributions
- Royal Institute of Navigation Gold Medal (GIOVE-A mission)
Grants & Advising: Secured modest research funding to develop satellite subsystems and payloads. Advised on missions like LEOPARD Phase 0-A, focusing on active debris removal. Collaborates with industry through SSTL for applied research.
Labs/Teams: Leadership at the Surrey Space Centre, a hub for innovative space systems research and education.
