Martin Summers is a Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the History Department at Boston College, affiliated with the Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. from Rutgers University. His research focuses on race, gender, sexuality, and medicine, particularly in African-American and African diaspora contexts.

- Race and mental health
- Urbanization’s impact on mental healthcare
Recent work examines African American mental health policy in 20th-century urban America. His awards include fellowships from the Ford Foundation, ACLS, Radcliffe Institute, and National Humanities Center.
He oversees graduate studies and teaches courses on post-1865 U.S. history, African American history, and global public health. His current book project explores mental health care in urban Black communities.
